Does anyone conducting exams as a private examiner charge state sales tax for their exams? Has anyone heard of doing this for polygraph exams?

Your question is timely and demonstrable to the greater issue of our field.[sarcasm]

Answer; I have never met an examiner who charges sales tax in the formal sense.

It's going to depend on the laws of each state, but, generally speaking, labor is not taxed, and I think that's what the whole process is (in the form of professional services). Don't say it too loudly though, or you'll give the politicians ideas!

Barry is correct. Generally labor is not taxable but you should check with your state's tax commission. Some states, like IOWA, have a long laundry list of taxable services (Polygraph isn't one of them)

Please check quietly. Once our lawmakers figure out that there is something or someone they aren't trying to tax into oblivion LOOK OUT. "No mans, Life Liberty or Property is safe while the Legislature is in session"

Boy!

If I can charge sales tax, then I could probably start attaching a 20% gratuity to my bill as well! God I love this business!

Ted, I already charge a gratuity of 20%, but only to parties of 8 or more.
